How they are used
 
For finding an object: A person holds the two rods loosely in front of them while walking. The rods will indicate the location of an object by crossing or moving towards each other.
 
For "yes" or "no" questions: The rods can be calibrated to answer questions. Typically, one movement (e.g., crossing) indicates "yes," and another (e.g., moving apart) indicates "no".
 
For finding water: The rods are held loosely, parallel to the ground. As you walk, they will move and point in the direction of a stronger water source. When you are directly over the source, the rods will cross.
